His standout performances in junior hockey caught the attention of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who signed him to their Ontario Hockey Association farm team, the Marlboros.

His impressive play earned him recognition as a top newcomer in both the Central Professional Hockey League and the American Hockey League in consecutive seasons.
