of the Month

Tracy Wong

February 2014

Summary

Tracy may well be the best female badminton player in OCAA history. Her resume is long and distiguished, as in her four years of play she is a 4-time CCAA All Canadian and a 4-time OCAA Player of the Year. She has never lost at an OCAA sanctioned event.

She was selected as the CCAA player of the Year in 2013.

Her results on the national stage have also been incredibly impressive, winning the CCAA Women’s Doubles national championship gold medal. In women’s singles, she took silver in her second year at Humber and bronze as a freshman. Three years, three national medals.

Tracy’s commitment to her team has never wavered, as she attends all practices and tournaments, and is always among the hardest working athletes across all sports. The leadership and drive she shows has helped drive the entire team to bigger and better things. Why does she win? Practice is at 6:00 pm and she is in with the coach and her partner at 4:30, and will get hundreds of more touches in before the rest of the team arrives.

Having participated right up to international play, fair-play has never been an issue. She respects the game, opponents and officials and always strives for the game to come first.

Off the court she is an outstanding student as she has been recognized as a CCAA Academic All Canadian.

She is as soft spoken and cheerful as they come, and has endeared herself to the entire Humber Hawk family. Athletes from many Hawk teams made a point to come out and cheer her on at the Humber Cup, and a number have made the road trip to do the same at Provincials. She has helped the sport of badminton find a genuine niche on the Humber sporting scene.

As an active and respected member of the Mandarin Badminton Club Tracy is very involved in Badminton in her community. As an internationally recognized athlete, younger members of her club look up to Tracy can derive inspiration from her accomplishments in the sport.

Having competed for her country Tracy has seen, first hand, the commitment and respect for the sport that is necessary to succeed at the highest level. Her tenacity pushes her to achieve greatness but her respect for the game keeps her humble. While being one of the most dominant players in college history you will never hear any self-promotion from Tracy, she just wants to play the game.
