Winner

Summary

Maria Suriani has been a cornerstone of the women’s varsity basketball team at Humber since her rookie year in 2009.

This 2012–2013 season will be her fifth with the Hawks squad that she has captained for the past three years. Maria credits basketball with teaching her countless life lessons, including discipline, leadership, respect, and work ethic, while also allowing her to travel across North America.

Despite her love for the sport itself, she says that the best part of being a varsity athlete has been the Humber Athletics family and its close-knit atmosphere.

Maria will graduate from the Sport Management program this year and plans to work with at-risk youth to give them an opportunity to compete in sports and gain the same valuable lessons and experiences that she did.

a Scholarship

The Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame awards seven scholarships, each valued at $1,000, to deserving individuals. These scholarships are not only a recognition of academic and athletic excellence but also of community involvement and financial need.

To ensure all students in the community are provided the opportunity to apply for the scholarships, all Etobicoke high school Physical Education and Counseling departments are contacted in advance.

The ESHOF believes we can make a difference in young people’s lives through our scholarship program and help the next generation of Etobicoke community builders succeed and go on to promote positive change for all and continue to empower our community.
