Remembering Frank Donald Selke: A Life Well Lived

On September 7, 1929, a legend was born. Frank Donald Selke, a name synonymous with hockey greatness, left an indelible mark on the sport and the lives of those around him. On March 18th, 2013, at the age of 83, Frank Selke passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.

Frank was more than just a hockey aficionado; he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather. Throughout his life, he shared countless precious moments with his beloved wife, Dorothy Julia “Red” Letts, and their children Gary, Greg, and Lisa. His family was his pride and joy, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Born into a legacy of hockey greatness, Frank’s journey in the sport began at a young age. Joining the Montreal Canadiens in 1946, where his father held a prominent position, Frank spent 21 years with the organization, witnessing the glory of Les Canadiens during the 1950s, a time he fondly referred to as the team’s “glory years.” His contributions to the team’s non-hockey operations were invaluable, and he formed lifelong friendships with players and associates alike.

Beyond the rink, Frank’s passion extended to the realm of broadcast media, where he played a pioneering role as a play-by-play analyst with Hockey Night in Canada. His love for golf not only brought him closer to his soulmate, Red, but also forged lasting friendships across various clubs.

Frank’s journey led him to Oakland, California, where he served as the General Manager of the Oakland Seals during the NHL expansion. Upon returning to Toronto in 1971, he continued his illustrious career with Hockey Night in Canada, eventually transitioning into a role as Executive Vice President.

Yet, Frank’s legacy transcends the boundaries of sports. His philanthropic endeavors, particularly his involvement with Special Olympics Ontario, exemplified his generous spirit and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the cause, using his extensive network to elevate the Special Olympics movement and champion the rights of Special Olympians and their families.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication, Frank received numerous accolades, including the Harry “Red” Foster Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. His impact resonated far and wide, touching the hearts of many and leaving an enduring legacy of compassion and kindness.

As we gather to celebrate Frank’s life, let us honor his memory by continuing his legacy of love, generosity, and bravery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Special Olympics Canada or a charity of your choice, a testament to Frank’s enduring commitment to making the world a better place.

Frank Selke may have left this world, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched. May his legacy inspire us to live each day with purpose, passion, and compassion.
