The Etobicoke sports community mourns the loss of Founding Member Bob Bendera, who passed away peacefully on January 9, 2017. Bob, a devoted family man and sports enthusiast, touched the lives of many.
Born on March 24, 1941, Bob’s passion for sports was evident from a young age. In 1965, he married Rosemary, and together they raised four children in Etobicoke. Bob’s dream of owning a sporting goods store became a reality with the opening of “Centennial Cycle and Sports” in 1966, which became a beloved institution in the city.
Known affectionately as “Bicycle Bob,” he was deeply involved in the local sports scene, coaching teams, sponsoring events, and providing equipment through his business. His commitment to the community led to his induction into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 as a Community Builder.
Bob’s zest for life, love for singing and dancing, and unwavering support for his family and friends left a lasting impact on everyone he met. His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and the countless lives he touched.
A visitation will be held on January 13th, and a funeral service on January 14th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Tire Jumpstart in Bob’s memory.
Joanne Noble, Chair of the Board of the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame, fondly remembers Bob’s immense contributions to the sports community and acknowledges his well-deserved place in the Hall as a Builder in 2012.
