Zach McRae

For the past two varsity seasons Sports Information Coordinator Intern Zach McRae has helped progress the online reach of Humber Athletics. McRae has done everything from updating the Athletics website, creating media guides and team programs, writing features, recaps and previews, and live streaming games. His duties are integral to running provincial and national events on campus. McRae said having Humber host last season’s CCAA Cross-Country Nationals has served as the highlight of his career where he learned to work under the pressure of publishing content within 30 minutes of each race finishing.

McRae said he has loved sports since he was 5 years old and has now built a career path for himself through Humber’s Sport Management program where he will graduate next semester. He has shown an incredible work ethic and has constantly proven himself as a great support to Varsity management and to his Sports Information colleagues.

He said he is incredibly grateful for his internship because it has given him a well rounded view of all that goes into covering sports and helping him expand his passion for sports.

Tracy Wong

Tracy Wong entered her third year as a part of the acclaimed varsity badminton program at Humber College this September.

In her previous two years with the program she has already claimed two medals, a silver and bronze, at the Canadian College Athletic Association national championships. She participated in the youth Olympics in 2010 and has been named an Academic All-Canadian both years she has been a Humber Hawk.

Her past successes and experience will serve her well as she heads to the 2012 Canadian National College/University Badminton Championships this November. Tracy eventually wants to graduate from Guelph-Humber’s Kinesiology program and maintain her involvement with sport for the rest of her life.

Maria Suriani

Maria Suriani has been a cornerstone of the women’s varsity basketball team at Humber since her rookie year in 2009.

This 2012–2013 season will be her fifth with the Hawks squad that she has captained for the past three years. Maria credits basketball with teaching her countless life lessons, including discipline, leadership, respect, and work ethic, while also allowing her to travel across North America.

Despite her love for the sport itself, she says that the best part of being a varsity athlete has been the Humber Athletics family and its close-knit atmosphere.

Maria will graduate from the Sport Management program this year and plans to work with at-risk youth to give them an opportunity to compete in sports and gain the same valuable lessons and experiences that she did.

Darren Mancini

Darren Mancini has only been with the Hawks for the past two years, but he already shares a palpable bond with the rest of his cross-country team.

Darren’s passion for running stems from the purpose he feels that it gives to his life. He placed 14th in Ontario last year and 28th in Canada, and has improved his race time by over three minutes from his first to second year. After graduating from Fitness and Health last year, Darren tributes the Humber varsity family with influencing his decision to further his education and pursue a diploma in Sport Management.

After graduation he plans to continue his involvement with Humber athletics by working with student athletes through coaching or training, and hopes to eventually give back to varsity athletics as an Athletic Director.

Genevieve Bernier

Genevieve Bernier has been a driving force for the Hawks curling team.

Bernier’s talent as a vice has taken her all over Ontario to play at the highest level possible. “I started out at York Curling Club, and played in Oakville and went all the way to Ottawa,” Bernier said. “I went where the good curling was.”

Her determination transfers over to academics where she’s already graduated from Humber’s personal support worker program and is working on a diploma in practical nursing.

Bernier has her sights set on a career as a nurse or in long-term care in geriatrics.

Tony Tedesco

Tony Tedesco is a member of the Humber men’s baseball team—a program in its infancy but has, like most Humber teams, already experienced success.

Tony has been on the team since its inception in 2011 and is entering his second year at Humber. Tony credits athletics with teaching him the importance of respect, perseverance, and hard work, and cites being a varsity athlete at Humber as motivation to always be improving and to achieve the same levels of success as his fellow Hawks.

Tony is set to graduate with a diploma in Recreation and Leisure in April 2013, and hopes to inspire and assist youth through recreation.
